We were grateful for the clear weather on our drive out but quickly got anxious for fresh snow once settled in, so when there was none the following week after arrival we started to get a little worried. Unlike last season as we moved into the last half of the month mother nature turned on the snow machine and the local mountains enjoyed 2-4 feet of snow for every 5-7 days until the first week of January! Since then it’s been the coldest winter since 1990 and the snow’s actually hanging around down in the valley, this time last year we were driving around with car windows down and eating lunch outside. Goods news is I’ve had the chance to enjoy an epic inbounds powder day with Aubrey , Logan and Mike all separately.
Here’s my latest video
Some pics from our resort days and the local backcountry
December 28th was forecasted to be a cloudless full moon night, perfect for a moonlit backcountry tour(my first) to an area of the Wasatch Called “Powder Park” with a couple of Logans touring partners James and Kaleb. I wish I would have had a proper cameratripod because the views of the moon shining through the aspens were stunning,
I’ve never seen anything like it….the moon was so bright none of us had to turn our headlamps on all night even to change over from skin to ride mode with our split boards.
Below is a random daytime pic of the area, we only put in a couple laps since it was cold as hell and was getting late(got home at 4am) but it was worth every minute truly an amazing experience that I greatly appreciated being a part of the crew.
here’s a brief article describing the Powder Park area
So when I got here Logans roomate Mike had a Jeremy Jones solution(manufactured by Nidecker) 161 for sale never ridden(was too small for him) for less than half the price of retail. Supposedly it was a factory blemish but we couldn’t find any blemishes..needless to say I was stoked to get rid of my old DIY splitboard(sold on craigslist) and ride the same board Jeremy Jones uses on first ascents all over the globe combined with a bran new pair of Spark splitboard bindings it was a HUGE upgrade from my backcountry setup last year which consisted of duct taped resort bindings and board some guy split, cut and drilled with who knows what in someones garage.
Got a great deal(over 60% off and no taxes) on the whole rig(now I’m eating raman noodles..sooo worth it oh well at least rents paid) , one of the best normal person setups money can buy(within reason) at a fraction of the cost hopefully it’s the last one I’ll ever need!
I wish I could explain how awesome this thing rides and more importantly how much easier it is on the way UP the mountain, lighter and FAR more efficient.
Here’s some pics(All from GoPro Hero2 mounted on my Helmet) from our first outing to get it all dialed in at BearTrap form just half way up Big CottonWood Canyon
Were getting settled in and acclimated to the altitude and city life again, I forgot how much I hate being in a major metro area around the holidays(ok pretty much anytime) and it’s even worse here than at home…don’t these people have jobs it’s 11am on a Wednesday and every store, parking lot and restaurant is PACKED. Love it here but between all the commercialism and horrible drivers it’s an adjustment from living in the country and working from home 4 days a week all summerfall.
Seriously here two pics from a sporting goods store here called Scheels it has full service restaurants, Starbucks, a ferris wheel and like 5000 gallon fish tank.
With all that said I never get sick of waking up and seeing the mountains , going ANYWHERE, looking in ANY direction and seeing mountains…..
This is what we wake up too and see when I’m making coffee every morning and Even a bad day at work wit this view isn’t THAT bad since I know I can be riding there in 15 minutes when I’m done for the day.
After a long brutal drive(after two days of house party)were finally here at Logan and Mike’s house in Sandy Utah
The trip out this year was pretty uneventful, no mechanical issues or running out of gas in the middle of Wyoming or South Dakota this time, Bruce took good care of us. We drove nonstop to Utah and then crahed for the night at Lizzy’s in Park City to do some couch crashing. Frankly we were just thrilled to be out of the car we didn’t even care that we didn’t have a bed to sleep on…or well any furniture.
Picture of us Driving home from matresseez of Utah the following day with our new winter bed, these mattresses were so cheap(but still kinda nice) Aubs and I just assumed they had little Chinese kids sewing them in the back room.
